Apple just sent the strongest hint yet that it’s working on a self-driving car

Apple, which has been infuriatingly secretive about it’s efforts to build a self-driving car, has sent the strongest hint yet about its so-called Project Titan. In a letter submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the tech giant states that it is “investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.”



The letter is Apple’s official comment on the federal government’s automated vehicle guidelines, released last September, which has already drawn feedback from many companies working on autonomous cars like Google and Ford. And speaking of Ford, Apple’s letter is signed by a man named Steven Kenner, the company’s head of product integrity who up until very recently was the global director of automotive safety at Ford. 

Apple has been working on Project Titan for several years, but has never formally acknowledged it. Lately, the autonomous car project seems to be in flux. Recent reporting suggests that the company is no longer attempting to build its own electric car to compete with companies like Tesla, but is instead focused on developing self-driving software it can deploy in partnership with existing carmakers. 
This letter comes amid news that hundreds of members of Apple's 1,000-employee-strong car team have been reassigned, let go, or have left of their own volition. The shift toward software is part of a new plan from longtime Apple executive Bob Mansfield, who came out of retirement to lead the Titan division after former project head Steven Zadesky left the company earlier this year. 



Meanwhile, the federal government is continuing to collect feedback from tech companies and car manufacturers on its recently released automated vehicle policy. A lobbying group representing some of the main players in the self-driving car space, such as Google, Uber, Ford, Volvo, and Lyft, are pushing back against the government’s request for companies to share data and safety specifications. But Apple says it would be ok with sharing data. 
“Apple agrees that companies should share de-identified scenario and dynamics data from crashes and near-misses,” Kenner writes in the letter. “By sharing data, the industry will build a more comprehensive dataset than any one company could create alone.”
That said, Apple also requests that the government allow for “regulatory flexibility” in order to encourage innovation. In other words, the company agrees with its peers in the tech and auto world that the feds should keep the guidelines voluntary and avoid passing any concrete rules or mandates.

In the real world it can be tough to avoid bullies or even prove what they have done. In Facebook, however, you have effective tools to deal with people who deliberately abuse you. And the good news is that all of your options are straight forward and simple.

Calmly Address The Offender

If you belong to the majority of victims that know their offender in real life (62%), you should probably respond to them. This obviously depends on the individual case, but sending a clear and mature message can do wonders or at least gain you a lot of respect.
When you speak with the offender, try to be friendly or professional. Fighting back with insults and threats will only bring you down to their low level. Instead, be mature and calmly ask the bully to stop. Only 14% of study participants had the guts to do that. Are you courageous enough to be one of them?

Report The Offense To Facebook

You can report offending wall posts to Facebook via the little ribbon menu in the top right of the respective post. Click the arrow head and select Report Story or Spam from the menu.

Next you will see a confirmation that the story was marked as spam. Click the file a report link and go through the following query to get Facebook’s attention.
If you received chat or private messages, you can essentially do the same. Go to the respective message and select Report Spam or Abuse… from the Actions menu.
In the following window, you can make one of three selections: mark the conversation as spam, report messages from a hacked friend, or report the sender as harassing or threatening you.

Unfriend The Offender

There is no good reason to remain friends with someone who is being mean to you.
Once you have marked a wall post from a friend as spam, Facebook will show you an unfriend button. Click it to remove that person from your friends list.
In private messages and anywhere else you can hover over the offender’s name and wait until a preview of their profile pops up. Hover over Friends until a menu opens, then select Unfriend from the bottom of the list.

Block The Offender

Unfriending might not be enough, especially if you don’t want to completely lock up your profile. Fortunately, you can selectively block individual Facebook users.
Go to Privacy Settings and switch to Blocking in the left-hand-menu. Under Block users, enter the name or email address of the offender and click Block.

Adjust Your Facebook Privacy Settings

Now that you have dealt with the bully, it’s time to look at your Facebook settings. If you fall into the group of people whose culprit wasn’t even on their Facebook friends list (27% in the GMI study), you should check the doors. Are they wide open for more people to find and harrass you on Facebook?
Here is what you can do:
  • allow only friends to find your profile
  • let only friends see your personal information on Facebook
  • organize your friends in lists and share updates selectively
  • accept Facebook messages from friends only
  • lock your wall or let only friends post on it

NASA will purposefully destroy its $1 billion Jupiter spacecraft just in case aliens exist

The $1.1 billion Juno mission hit ahuge milestone Monday night when it successfully enteredJupiter's orbit.

But what will happen to it inFebruary 2018 when its job is done?
Spacecraft don't really get happy retirements. Sure, there are a few space shuttles resting on their laurels in museums, but that's because they brought people home.


Some unmanned probes do make it back to Earth if part of their mission is to bring back a sample, like Hayabusa, a Japanese spacecraft that visited an asteroid.
Juno won't get that kind of treatment. In fact, its fate is much grimmer. After its final trip around Jupiter, it will enter what NASA euphemistically calls its "deorbit phase."
That's a tactful way of saying Juno will spend the last five and a half days of its existence hurling itself into Jupiter. The planet's atmosphere is so harsh the spacecraft will burn up.
NASA being NASA, they've already produced an animation of what Juno's fiery death will look like.
t's the same fate that met Juno's predecessor on the trip to Jupiter, Galileo, in 2003.
But why fling a $1.1 billion satellite into an extraordinarily large ball of burning gas?
For the (potential) aliens, that's why!
Scientists currently think one of our best shots at finding living organisms beyond Earth is on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons that might have an ocean hiding underneath its frozen surface. NASA is currently working on figuring out how to send a lander to Europa to get a better handle on whether there's any life to be seen there. Two other Jovian moons, Ganymede and Callisto, are also on the list of contenders.
NASA and its Office of Planetary Protection have very strict rules about contaminating space, particularly when it comes to places we think we want to look for life. Logically enough, it doesn't want to spend a billion dollars on the next spacecraft just to find some organism it turns out we put there. (Oops.)
Throwing Juno into Jupiter protects Jupiter's moons from contamination, since the trip through Jupiter's atmosphere and radiation will destroy any bacteria that may have snuck onto Juno before it launched.
The planetary protection protocols are also why spacecraft are assembled in clean rooms by people wearing protective gear. And as we learn more about the worlds around us, those rules change. Galileo's death plunge was actually a change of plan, prompted when NASA got the first hints that Jupiter's moons could actually be hospitable to life.
The dramatic death also keeps Juno from adding to our huge space junk problem.

Watch live as NASA's Juno mission attempts to enter Jupiter's orbit

The biggest space event of the year is happening soon. On July 4, NASA’s un-crewed Juno spacecraft will end its nearly five-year journey through space and embark on a mission to study the planet Jupiter like never before. 
But first, the spacecraft must lock on to Jupiter into what’s called a polar orbit. This is the most dangerous part of the entire Juno mission, and is what NASA will be watching instead of fireworks this holiday weekend.


As Juno approaches its destination on July 4, Jupiter’s tremendous gravitational pull will accelerate the spacecraft to blazing speeds of more than 150,000 mph (241,000 km/h), making Juno one of the fastest human-made objects ever built. 
After reaching a max speed of 165,000 mph (266,000 km/h) – fast enough to fly around Earth in 9 minutes – Juno will slam on the breaks by firing its engines. This is where things get tricky.
The Juno spacecraft weighs 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg) and will be barreling through space at 215 times the speed of sound. To slow down, the engines will fire for 35 minutes straight, burning through 17,600 pounds (7,900 kg) of fuel in the process.
If all goes according to plan, this perilous manoeuvre will place Juno into orbit around Jupiter, where the spacecraft will remain over the next 18 months, providing an unprecedented look at Jupiter’s powerful gravitational and magnetic fields. 
If something goes wrong, the US$1.13 billion mission will shoot past Jupiter, into deep space with no chance of return.
NASA only has one shot at this. The engine burn will start at 11:18pm ET on July 4.

You don't need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in the cloud on an iPad or iPhone, but if you're planning to buy the larger iPad Pro you won't get Office for free. Microsoft has confirmed to Ars Technica that Office on the iPad Pro will require an Office 365 subscription to edit documents.


That might come as a surprise to many, but it's a policy for bigger tablets that Microsoftimplemented in March. Microsoft has a cut off point for free Office Mobile, and any tablet larger than 10.1 inches will require an Office 365 subscription to edit documents. The same restriction applies to Microsoft's Windows 10 Office Mobile apps and versions for Android. While it's not clear exactly how Microsoft will restrict the use of Office for iPad Pro, if you want to edit documents you'll need to buy an Office 365 Personal subscriptionfor $6.99 per month (or $69.99 a year).

Rip Paper: Facebook Shreds Its Experimental, Redesigned App For IOS

Facebook’s Paper is no more. The company is shutting down the app, which was an attempt at redesigning the standard Facebook app, but ultimately failed to capture serious attention from a large number of users.

Paper was interesting solely because of its design — the app had customizable sections for different topics, including politics, technology, food, and so on. Paper was originally released in 2014, and was designed by Mike Matas from Push Pop Press, a design firm that Facebook bought in 2011.

“Our goal with Paper was to explore new, immersive, interactive design elements for reading and interacting with content on Facebook, and we learned how important these elements are in giving people an engaging experience,” said Facebook in a message to users.

Paper was launched as somewhat of an experiment, allowing users to experience Facebook in a new and interesting way. It was centered on consuming news content, however, it was only released to the iPhone, never getting an iPad version or an Android version. Paper was also the only app you could use to go through your news feed and reply to messages in the one app — the Messenger app was rolled out of the standard Facebook iOS app.

Despite being highly praised for its design, Paper hasn’t been in the most downloaded app list, which features 1,500 apps, since December 2014, according to a report from The Verge.

Of course, while the actual app is going to app heaven, certain concepts from the app have made their way over to the standard Facebook app. Instant Articles, for example, has a very similar design to Paper, including how it handles images and the fact that it lets publishers create their own custom designs.

It appears as though the app has already been removed from the app store.

‘You Were Not Hired Because You’re a Woman’ is Killing the Startup World

As the father of three girls and one boy, I can't believe this is still true. How is it even possible? How could you only get hired in a development job or get venture capital if you look homogeneous to Mark Zuckerberg?

At the SxSW conference, I attended a panel on diversity and gender inequality in the tech world because I wanted to ascertain more about what to do and why it is still a quandary. It commenced out with a bold verbalization about how tech startups incline to hire only males. That is a terrible practice because it signifies an entire viewpoint is being neglected and ignored. Tech is not as affluent, and in fact is missing a perspective that will dramatically ameliorate the market.

Last year at this time, Megan Smith, the CTO of the U.S. Regime, verbalized at SxSW that how you look--e.g., the male geek--is still a stigma in tech circles.
