Ibrahimovic reveals why he kicked Coleman in the head

Sunday, December 4, 2016 /
The Manchester United striker has attempted to play down his clash with the Everton defender in Sunday's fixture

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has explained why he kicked Seamus Coleman in the head during Manchester United's draw at Everton, insisting it wasn't a deliberate incident.
The 35-year-old scored the visitors' goal at Goodison Park with a brilliant first-half lob, but was frustrated when Leighton Baines claimed a point for Ronald Koeman's side with a penalty one minute from time.

Sunday's match also saw Ibrahimovic involved in a heavy challenge with Everton defender Coleman - who later had to be substituted - and his foot made contact with the Republic of Ireland international's head in the aftermath.

But Ibrahimovic has stressed there was no intent in what was a hard-fought battle on Merseyside with the prospect of a retrospective ban looming large should the FA deem otherwise.
"They played hard and I heard one of the commentators say I kicked someone in the head on purpose," Ibrahimovic told MUTV.
"It was a 50-50 duel. He pulled me down and I tried to avoid touching him."

The draw means United have only won two of their past 11 Premier League matches, a run Ibrahimovic knows is unacceptable if the club are to challenge for the title - or even make the top four.

"It was very disappointing obviously, because the last couple of games in the league have not had the outcome that we wanted especially after a good performance," added the striker.
"We controlled the game, not 100 per cent, but most of it and I think we did good until 70 minutes. Then I think we were not playing our normal game, we lost confidence and we lost the two points.
"The positive is we didn't lose the match. That's the positive. We know we need to win. You want to reach the Champions League and win the competition [the league title] and you need to get three points to do that.

"I would be more confident if we were higher up in the table because that's what we play for."
In-form Ibrahimovic's goal was his sixth in five matches across all competitions, but the Sweden great would have sacrificed scoring if it meant United took all three points.

"I went for the run in the space and got a fantastic ball from [Anthony] Martial," added the former Paris Saint-Germain star.

"I saw the goalkeeper come out and I just tried to time it good and went to touch the ball. It hit the post, hit the bar and in the end it went in.
"I scored but in the end it only got me and the team one point. I would prefer not to score but win the game, that's my way of thinking. We have to fight more and do more to get the three points we need."

'Last time he played, the UK was in Europe' - Twitter reacts to Schweinsteiger's comeback

Thursday, December 1, 2016 /
The German midfielder made his first appearance for the first team since March, and was given a rapturous reception by the Old Trafford faithful

It had been a long time coming, but Bastian Schweinsteiger has finally pulled on the Manchester United shirt under Jose Mourinho!

The former Germany international and World Cup winner had been frozen out since the manager's arrival, and was even banished to train with the reserves.
But he enjoyed an emotional reintroduction to first-team duties on Wednesday as the Red Devils overcame West Ham to make the League Cup semi-finals.
As was to be expected, fans on Twitter had their own unique take on events - as did the great man himself...

Man Utd not good enough for top four finish'

/
Harry Redknapp sees the Red Devils missing out on qualification for next season's Champions League as they continue to underwhelm under the guidance of Jose Mourinho
Manchester United are unlikely to finish inside the Premier League’s top four this season, according to former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.
The Red Devils have struggled for consistency since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, failing to challenge for major titles over the last three years.

In the wake of Louis van Gaal's departure at the end of last season, Jose Mourinho was appointed to lead a new-look side in a challenge for the league title, but the Portuguese has so far not had he desired impact.
United booked a spot in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 4-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday night, and are closing in on a place in the second round of the Europa League.
It is, however, their top-flight struggles that have dominated the headlines and seen the greatest level of scrutiny placed on Mourinho and his under-performing troops.

A run of one win in seven league games, with four straight draws on home soil, has United well off the pace in the title race and eight points adrift of the Champions League spots.
Redknapp believes a side that has offered little cause for optimism thus far will end up missing out on a seat at continental football’s top table – unless they end up winning the Europa League and qualifying through that route.

He told Betsafe: "Man United aren't good enough at the moment, I look at the team and it doesn't excite me.
"Man United will do well to make the top four this year.

“They will finish in top six but I don't know if they will make the top four.”
United could start to close the gap on the Premier League’s leading pack before the end of the calendar year, but have a couple of testing fixtures on the horizon.

Everton have not been in the greatest form themselves of late, but they can be expected to raise their game for United's visit to Goodison Park on Sunday.
The Red Devils then complete their Europa League group stage schedule against Zorya Luhansk before welcoming Tottenham to Old Trafford on December 11.

Jose Mourinho exasperated by Man Utd dressing room

/
Reports suggest that the manager is less than happy with the set-up at Old Trafford, and will take steps to remedy the situation after a difficult introduction to life at the club
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly planning a root-and-branch overhaul of the club after becoming exasperated at what he has seen so far, especially in the dressing room.
The Portuguese boss has seen his team stagnate after a positive start to the season, and they currently lie eight points off the Premier League summit.

And according to a BBC report, he is less than happy with attitudes around Old Trafford.
Defenders Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling found themselves the targets of public criticism at the weekend, with Mourinho suggesting their late withdrawals through injury against Swansea betrayed a "lack of fight."
"There is a difference between the brave, who want to play at any cost, and the ones for whom a little pain can make a difference," he told reporters, while exhorting his players to "do anything" for the team.

Pre-season planning and fitness are apparently the two areas Mourinho is keen on improving, although he is considering a thorough investigation into "all aspects of the first team," according to the report.
An abortive tour of China before the campaign kicked off left the ex-Real Madrid and Chelsea man furious, while he has taken steps to revamp the club's fitness regime which may be taken further.

In turn the boss has found himself in the spotlight already this season for mostly negative reasons.
His treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who had been banished from the first team, and under-used new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan has raised eyebrows, while he was forced to watch United's 3-1 win over Swansea from the stands after a touchline bust-up with Mark Clattenburg the previous week.

Brazilian side tragically lost 19 players when their plane crashed in Colombia

SOUTH AMERICAN legends Ronaldinho and Juan Roman Riquelme are reportedly considering coming out of retirement to play for Chapecoense following a huge social media campaign.
Chapecoense tragically lost 19 players when a plane crashed on route to Colombia – killing 71 people on board.

The footballing world has come together to pay tribute to the side and their families that left just three Chapecoense players surviving the plane crash.
Whilst Brazilian sides have offered to loan players to the club free of charge, reports are circulating that Ronaldinho and Riquelme have offered to dust off their boots pull on the green and white of Chapecoense.
Riquelme, who last played for Argentinos Juniors in 2014, has won Argentina’s Footballer of the Year four times whilst Ronaldinho was crowned the world’s best player in 2005.

Cambodian Olympians

Wednesday, August 24, 2016 /

Cambodia has a long and proud tradition of participation in the Olympic Games that started in 1956, with the Kingdom's first Olympic appearance at the Equestrian Olympic Game of Stockholm. Since then, the popularity of the Olympic Games among Cambodians has grown exponentially. Alongside the growing national esteem for the event, the government has actively sought to promote sporting excellence in the Kingdom through various programs and the ongoing development of the country's sporting infrastructure.

Since first entering the Games around 60 years ago, Cambodia has sent 37 participants to seven editions of the Summer Olympic Games. 2012 was their fifth consecutive games appearance and eighth overall. Cambodian athletes have competed in seven different disciplines. A country renowned for its aptitude for boxing, it is unsurprisingly one of the country’s strongest Olympic activities. The country ranked 9th place in the 1964 games, thanks to two Cambodian boxers: Khiru Soeun, a featherweight and Touch Nol, a light-welterweight.

However, any discussion of the country’s Olympic history should start with Hem Thon, one of the Kingdom’s greatest sportsmen and the nation’s most lauded swimmer. Hem Thon passed away in January 2015 after a brilliant sporting career that saw him dominate the national swimming scene for a decade, placing first in every competition. His greatest moment of glory came at a competition in Singapore where he won his first international gold medal, outclassing renowned  swimmers from four other countries in the 100 meters freestyle.

The weight of Hem Thon’s contribution to Cambodian sports and Olympic performance is immeasurable. He founded the Swimming Federation in 1983, and served as it’s Secretary General for the next 32 years. At the time of his death, Hem Thon was serving as the Deputy Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC)

Hem Thon’s son, Hemthon Punlou, and granddaughter, Hemthon Vittiny, followed the patriarchal footsteps and are both accomplished athletes in the swimming pool. Representing Cambodia in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, they both raced alongside the best swimmers in the world. With the hopes of a whole nation resting on them, the duo has been working hard to prepare themselves for the 2016 Summer Olympics Games, which will take place in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil.

Wrestler Chov Sotheara is another lauded athlete, and one of the nation’s most accomplished sportswomen. At the 27th edition of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA games) held in Myanmar, Chov Sotheara repeated her success of the 2009 SEA Games in Laos by taking home gold in the freestyle event. Chov Sotheara competed in London, having received a special scholarship from the International Olympic Committee(IOC) to help her train and qualify for the games.

Sorn Seavmey, also known as Cambodia’s Golden Girl, gained national and international attention when she clinched a gold medal in the women’s taekwondo event at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Her medal was Cambodia’s first gold at the Asian Games, and it’s significance for the Cambodian sporting scene is unprecedented. Sorn Seavmey was also a 2013 SEA Games gold medalist. Having become Cambodia’s Olympic sweetheart, the eyes of the whole nation will fall upon her as she readies herself for the upcoming Rio games.

Sorn Davin is another taekwondo sportswoman that has risen to prominence in the Kingdom. Born in the city of Phnom Penh, Sorn Davin clinched a silver medal in the 2009 SEA Games. She represented Cambodia at the 2012 London Games and was given the honor of carrying the flag for her country during the Parade of Nations.

Pugilist Phal Sophat is also a source of national pride. He captured a  silver medal in boxing at the 2009 SEA Games, Competing in one of the Kingdom’s most widely followed and loved sports, Phal Sophat has quickly become a well-known figure after his brilliant 2009 performance. He also had the honor of competing in London alongside the world’s best pugilists. To help him prepare for the event, he received a scholarship from the IOC.

The government of Cambodia has gone to great lengths to promote sporting excellence, and improve the country’s performance in future Olympic Games. The recipients wre Sorn Davin and Sorn Seavmey for taekwondo, Ngoun Makara and Chov Sotheara for wrestling and Hemthon Vittiny for swimming.

Through initiatives to support budding talent and develop local sporting infrastructure, the Kingdom of Cambodia is proudly helping their athletes constantly raise their performance to become increasingly competitive in international arenas. With a growing community of promising sportspeople, it won’t be long before we see Cambodian athletes stride towards to Olympic podium.

UEFA ban players' families from on-pitch celebrations

Wednesday, July 6, 2016 /
The sight of players celebrating Euro 2016 victories on the pitch with their families could be a thing of the past now that UEFA wants to prohibit all non-accredited people from going on the field.
Tournament director Martin Kallen cited security risks as the main reason for UEFA's request.

"We're not totally against it, but we have to be cautious and ensure security," he said. "It is a European Championship not a family party.

"A stadium is not the safest place for small kids. Only people with accreditation can access the pitch, nobody else."
As well as pointing to the security risks of allowing children on the pitch, Kallen also explained the need to preserve the grass.
Speaking about the state of the turf at the Stade de France - the venue for the final - he was confident that it would be sufficient.
"There shouldn't be a problem as we have roughly a week and in the most recent matches we've seen that the Stade de France turf was of much better quality, [it is good,] not excellent," he explained.
Asked about the prohibiting of teams from training on stadium pitches ahead of some matches, the director insisted that this was a necessary precaution.
"There are always concerns about the grass as it is used a lot," Kalen said.
More serious concerns have also emerged for European football's governing body following reports that a 25-year-old British fan was stabbed near Paris' Gare du Nord after the France-Iceland match on Sunday.
Emergency treatment was required at Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital and he now appears to be stable.
